O-alkylation of hydroquinone with methanol was performed over alkali metal ion-exchanged zeolite catalysts in a slurry type reactor near a critical condition. The effects of temperature, pressure and the amount of methanol on the catalytic activity and selectivity were tested to maximize the selectivity and yield of 4-methoxyphenol or 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Thus far, higher than 95% selectivity to 4-methoxyphenol was obtained at 93% conversion of hydroquinone using 0.2g catalyst at 533K for 2h. In addition, higher than 75% selectivity to 1,4-dimethoxybenzene was also obtained even at a higher than 99% conversion by changing the operating conditions and/or at catalyst bed location.
