Artificial hybrid materials consisting of organic matrices and inorganic materials with brick and-mortar layered structures have been developed to mimic the superior mechanical properties of nacre; however, high strength and high toughness tend to be mutually exclusive. The materials proposed on recent researches are still limited in terms of both their toughness and fabrication methods. Herein, we report nacre-inspired ultra-tough and strong hybrid film based on hydrogel-mediated film casting. This fabrication technique allows for facile preparation of hybrid films with uniform structures based on pre-tailored hydrogels consisting of alginate (Alg) and alumina (Alu) platelets. The Ca2+ crosslinking in Alg and well-embedded Alu in the Alg matrix lead to improvements of the strength and toughness in the resulting film. The Ca2+-crosslinked Alg/Alu films showed exceptionally high toughness of 29.5 MJ m-3 and high strength of 160 MPa. Additionally, by modifying the Alu surface with polyvinylpyrrolidone, the strength was further improved up to 190 MPa. Our results show an alternative approach to designing and processing preparation of hybrid films with superior mechanical properties. |
