Cyclic polymers show specific properties relative to linear polymers due to their topological peculiarity. We did a comparative study on the separation of the cyclic and linear polymer pairs, which depends on the relative size of a polymer chain to the pore size (R/d) and interaction strength of the polymer chains with the stationary phase of the column. In this study, we investigated the retention behavior of the cyclic polymer vs. linear polymer at three different separation modes of HPLC, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), liquid chromatography at the critical condition (LCCC), and interaction chromatography (IC). Throughout the three separation modes, a cyclic polymer was retained longer than the linear counterpart. The enthalpy and entropy changes associated with the sorption of polymer chains with the stationary phase were obtained from the temperature dependence of the retention factor. |
