The aim of the present work is to develop the methods for synthesis of nano-sized iron-containing derivatives of chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polyethylenimine (PEI) as MRI contrast enhancing agents. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) having high magnetization and crystallinity were synthesized by a sonochemical method. The characteristics of chitosan, PVA, and PEI coated SPIO were studied by X-ray diffractometry, magnetic property measurement system, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and particle size analysis. The size of SPIO increased with chitosan, PVA, PEI contents and SPIO an average diameter of 10 nm were produced. The chitosan, PVA, and PEI coated SPIO exhibited a well-dispersed property in water. The results obtained in this study confirmed the feasibility of the chitosan, PVA, PEI coated SPIO as a biomaterial for MRI contrast agent. |
