Design of Biomolecular Interfaces to Liquid Crystals that Permit Reporting of Biomolecular Interactions |

This presentation will describe the design of biomolecular interfaces that permit reporting of the variety of biomolecular interactions. The approach revolves around the use of liquid crystals to image biomolecules captured at the interfaces. We will report principles for the design of surfaces with chemical functionality and nanometer-scale topography that (I) uniformly align liquid crystals when not supporting proteins and (II) quantitatively capture target proteins delivered to the interface from the bulk. The molecular mechanisms giving rise to the orientations of the liquid crystals on these interfaces will be discussed. The orientational response of the nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4’-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) to the captured proteins will be discussed in terms of the molecular mechanisms of interaction between proteins and liquid crystals, and shown to provide the basis of a simple and sensitive method to report specific interactions between biomolecules. |
