Phenylethyleneamine (dopamine) can be easily self-polymerized under an aqueous alkaline condition. During polymerization, polydopamine layer can be formed on many kinds of substrates including polymer, metal, and ceramics. However, the final structure and reaction , mechanism is still unclear, particularly on either the polymeric nature of melanin or its amorphous aggregates. In this study, the structure and reaction mechanism of polydopamine (or dopamined-based supramolecules) was reanalyzed using spectroscopic methods, X-ray analysis, and XPS to reveal the nature of deposition process on various polymeric substrates. The effect of oxidizing conditions on the nature of self-deposition will be also studied in terms of surface compositions, surface morphology and different reaction mechanisms. |
