Hydrocarbon / Cerium composite membranes were prepared and its oxidative durability was investigated for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell application. The composite membranes were based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES, 50% DS) along with different content of Ce ion. Ce ion was incorporated by not only simple mixing, but also immersion method in order to find optimum condition for its impregnation. Amount of Ce impregnation was observed by FT-NMR and ICP-AES. Also, FT-NMR spectroscopy and XRD confirmed successful exchange of sulfonic acid to Ce salt form. Impregnation showed strong effect on water uptake, ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity of SPAES membranes. Accelerated OCV durability test (DOE condition) showed that stability of the composite membrane was enhanced than that of pristine one. |
