The influence of multi-solute polarities on the flux of water through membrane was studied using a simple on-lattice Monte Carlo simulation method. Joining and breaking probabilities defined for the interactions among water, solutes, and membrane were introduced to explain a number of related phenomena inside and outside membrane layer. Depending on the magnitude of solute polarities, the concentration of solutes entering and remaining in the membrane is determined. A critical set of parameters which give a notable change in the flux of water through the membrane is also determined. The present simulation model can be effectively used to simply understand and guide transport phenomena relevant to complicated membrane processes. |
