Nanostructured Functional Liquid Crystalline Assemblies |

We have been developing new generation of functional liquid crystalline (LC) materials and related soft materials. The control of molecular shape, nanosegregation of incompatible molecular components, and intermolecular interactions can provide a variety of LC nanostructures such as layer, columnar, and cubic phases. One of our approaches is to use these nanostructured liquid crystals for the transportation of ions, charges, and molecules and stimuli-responsive photoluminescence. Bicontinuous cubic 3D ionic channels are formed by self-assembly of ionic liquid crystals. Mechanochromic liquid crystals that exhibit luminescence changes due to themechanically-induced LC phase transitions are obtained for π-conjugated molecules having dendritic moieties. |
