Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) have received significant attention in recent years because of their advantages over proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). AEMs remedy shortcomings of PEM, for example, the electrochemical reactions are more facile in alkaline medium and permit the use of non noble metal catalyst thus reducing cost. The key components for AEMs should possess high hydroxide conductivity with low swelling and long durability. Poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) containing pendant imidazolium cation displayed high chemical stability due to delocalization of positive charge over heterocyclic ring. In this study, we prepared alkyl substituted pendant imidazolium group at C-2 position. We believe that, alkyl substituted imidazolium group prevent the nucleophilic attack of hydroxide ion resulting high ion conductivity. We also fabricated the membrane for AEM and mechanical·chemical properties of membrane will be discussed. |
