In polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), Pt is most widely used as both anode and cathode catalysts. However, high cost and limited resources of Pt are the factor that interferes with the commercialization of fuel cells. In order to reduce the amount of Pt, Pt-Pd alloys are fabricated because Pd has similar physical properties to Pt such as fcc crystal structure and atomic radius. Also, Pd shows the superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance in acidic media compared with other transition metal. Therefore, Pt-Pd alloys are synthesized and nitrogen-doped carbon black (NCB) is used as the support in order to enhance the ORR activity. Electrochemical and physical properties of Pt-Pd alloys/nitrogen-doped carbon black (Pt-Pd/NCB) are investigated by various instruments. Finally, a single cell test is conducted for Pt-Pd/NCB cathode catalyst with different ratio of Pt to Pd. |
