Anion exchange membrane(AEM) fuel cells have received significant attention in recent years because of their advantages over proton exchange membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs). AEMs address many shortcomings of PEM, for example, the electrochemical reactions are more facile in alkaline medium and permit the use of non noble metal catalyst thus reducing cost. The key for AEMs should possess high hydroxide conductivity together with high dimensional and long durability. However, the present AEMs are suffering from poor stability. Recently, poly(arylene ether sulfone) containing pendant imidazolium cation displayed high chemical stability due to delocalization of positive charge over the five membered heterocyclic ring. In this context, we prepared alkyl substituted pendant imidazolium group at C-2 position. We believe that alkyl substituted imidazolium group prevent the nucleophilic attack of hydroxide ion. We also fabricated membrane for AEM and the membrane properties will be discussed. |
