The interactions between membrane and particles and among particles based on DLVO theory are examined in order to probe complex membrane fouling phenomena. An on-lattice Monte Carlo model is developed for two-dimensional membrane pore and surface. The effects of interactions on membrane retention, membrane resistance and cake layer density are studied with the microstructural changes in cake layer formation. The model can be widely applied to the analysis of membrane fouling from a variety of foulant particles such as proteins, microbes, polymer colloids and inorganic particles. |
