Catalytic hydrotreating of macroalgal bio-oil and vegetable oil blends for biofuel production |

Macroalgae biomass have received considerable interest as a potentially favorable feedstock that can be sustainably cultivated and converted to biofuel. Crude bio-oil as biofuel source con be produced by fast pyrolysis of biomass. However, the crude bio-oil cannot directly be used as biofuel because of high oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen content in bio-oil. The aim of this study is to hydrotreat the macroalgal (S. japonica) bio-oil mixed with non-edible vegetable oil as a co-biofuel resource for bio-heavy fuel oil production. The catalytic hydrotreating over palladium- and nikel-based catalyst at liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) 1.5 h-1 was compared in a continuous fixed-bed reactor. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD. The catalytic activities were evaluated by iodine (IV) and acid (AV) values under different temperature and pressure. The catalytic activities over Nikel-based catalyst exhibited higher than that of Palladium-based catalyst. The decreased IV and AV of the product indicated to reduce unsaturated double bond and carboxylic acid, respectively. |
