Despite the wide-spread study of banana peels for adsorption applications, no report is available on its application for recovery of precious metal ions. In this research, not only was banana peel evaluated for selective recovery of gold from multi-metal mixtures, but also attempts were made to understand the components responsible for the adsorption process. In a multi-metal system comprising Au(III), Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Li(I) and Co(II) in 100 mg/L each, selectivity coefficient toward gold was as high as 978.5. By sequential extraction and isolation of the different components such as lipids, proteins and carbohydrates from the banana peel, the adsorption mechanisms were elucidated and discussed. |
