Nafion/MMT Clay Nanocomposite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |

We prepared Nafion/clay nanocomposite membranes to reduce methanol permeability while maintaining essential proton conductivity. Chemically treated clays were ultrasonifically dispersed in Nafion/DMA solution, and exfoliated during solvent casting at 100℃. Featureless diffraction pattern of Nafion/clay nanocomposite indicated disordered exfoliated composite structure. TEMicrographs also showed layers were exfoliated by well dispersed in nanolayer in Nafion® resin. It was confirmed that nano-dispersed clay improved both tensile strength and elongation at break. Reflective index measurement indicated that methanol permeability of Nafion®117 was ca. 6x10-5 mol/cm2․s while that of 3 wt% Nafion/clay nanocomposite membrane (~50 ㎛) decreased down to the order of 10-7 mol/cm2․s. Platinum black catalysts were sprayed on carbon paper for the fabrication of MEA. Unit cell (6 cm2) performance was tested using 2M-MeOH and O2. Nafion 117 membranes reached 250 mA/cm2 (at 0.5 V, 70℃) but nanocomposite membranes reached about 250 mA/cm2 at the same condition.
