Nafion is widely used as a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) membrane. But its high methanol permeability lowers fuel efficiency. In order to solve this problem and enhance the proton conductivity, the polymer blend of sulfonated polysulfone copolymer and non-sulfonated polysulfone was studied. Sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) copolymer with 60 mol% sulfonation (sPAES-60) was synthesized via poly-condensation reaction for the proton conducting component. And to reduce the methanol permeability poly ether sulfone copolymer (RH-2000) was used. By varying the drying condition (HT, FD1, FD2) and the concentration of the casting solution (10wt%, 15wt%, 20wt%), morphology and the phase separation mechanism could be controlled. Morphology, mechanical stability, water uptake, dimensional stability, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the blend membranes were investigated by SEM, AFM,, Instron, AC impedance spectroscopy and permeability measuring instrument. |
