Preparation and characterization of waterborne ethylene acrylic acid copolymer (EAA)/sodium montmorillonite (NaMMT) nanocomposite coatings |

Nanocomposites based on various waterborne polymers and inorganic nanofillers have been studied extensively for the development of environmental friendly coatings with high performance and functional properties. In this study, nanocomposites of waterborne ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer(EAA) with sodium montmorillonite (NaMMT) were prepared by simple water-assisted mixing without addition of any volatile organic solvent. TEM and XRD results demonstrated homogeneous and nanoscaled dispersion of the NaMMT in the EAA matrix. Thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite films were characterized by DSC, DMA and tensile testing. Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water-vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the nanocomposites were also examined. |
