Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) separators is mixed with metal oxide ceramic additives, namely, titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and aluminum oxide (Al2O3), in order to enhance the porosity and electrochemical performance in a low-cost and environmentally-friendly approach for a high performance separator in supercapacitor applications. The physical properties of the ceramic PVA separators have been measured using morphological analysis, electrolyte uptake and retention, electrolyte contact angle with separator, and thermal shrinkage testing. Electrochemical characterizations have also been conducted in order to test its enhanced electrochemical performance including impedance tests, cyclic voltammograms, and charge-discharge tests. The results show that our ceramic PVA separators exhibit good physical properties as well as electrochemical performance in comparison with bare PVA as well as other commercial separators. |
