Recycling waste plastics has been one of the problems to be solved in plastic industries. The properties of recycled plastics are normally lower than those of the virgin plastics. Tt would be desirable if recycled plastics can have recovered or enhanced properties by incorporating natural fibers, which are abundant biomass, inexpensive, and biodegradable, into them. Biocomposites consisting of natural fibers and biodegradable or non-biodegradable polymer resins have been made and reported, but those reinforced with rice straws have been seldom studied yet, in particular using twin-screw extrusion technique. In this study, extruded pellets with biomass-based rice straws and recycled plastic(HDPE) were successfully processed and the biocomposites were compression-molded. The flexural, tensile, and impact properties and heat deflection temperature of the biocomposites were investigated focusing on the effect of loading and alkali treatment condition of rice straws on their properties. |
