Starch based graft copolymers have been researched due to their useful properties such as environmentally friendly and biodegradable characteristics, relatively low cost in plastic industry, easy handling better than other carbohydrates etc. Starch based graft copolymer with carboxylic acrylate were manufactured using extrusion process for grafting with esterification reaction and polymerization. Acrylate starch semiester was synthesized by the esterification of carboxylic acrylate and the polymerization of the monomer was conducted by reactive extrusion process. The monomers were reacted under various compositions with ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator and tetraethylene glycol diacrylate (TEGDA) as the crosslinking agents, ion exchanger as esterification agent. The reaction of starch based graft copolymer was confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). |
