Preparation of epoxy based radiation shields containing lead monoxide using direct ultrasound excitation |

As a gamma or X-ray shield, lead (Pb) based materials are commonly used. However, lead is sometimes limited, even prohibited due to it’s high toxicity. In this investigation, we are exploring the polymer composites containing the radiation attenuating filler such as PbO. Dispersion and adhesion of PbO particles in/with the polymer resin are critical to enhance the material properties, and more importantly to capture the particles strongly in the matrix. It is also important to disperse filler particles as many as possible to enhance the shielding efficiency. We prepared the PbO-epoxy composite up to 90 wt% of concentration, equivalent to 5.2 g/cm3, by using direct ultrasound excitation, while the elongation was enhanced ~38.7% compared to the non-ultrasound-treated composites. The dispersion, adhesion, and the mechanical properties of the samples were evaluated by using the various means including SEM/TEM associated with EDX and universal testing machine (UTM). |
