In Dye-sensitized solar cells, the most successful charge-transfer sensitizers employed are ruthenium polypyridyl complexes yielding 9-11% solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency. The majority of the ruthenium complexes reported to date show absorption in the visible region at around 535 nm. The further shift in the absorption wavelength or covalently linking these ruthenium (II) polypyridyl complexes onto the NIR absorbing dyes may increase the overall efficiency of the DSSCs. In this context, we have successfully synthesized the 1, 3-disubstituted Squaraine dye that is covalently linked to 2,2’-dipyridines. The electronic absorption spectrum shows the absorption peaks that are distinctive of the bipyridines and squaraine. The absorption spectrum of ruthenium complex is red shifted and distinctive of the bipyridines, squaraine and ruthenium (II) centre. |
