Chitin, poly(1→4)-2-acetamino-2-deoxy-β-D-glucose, has three polymorphic structure according to raw materials such as crab shell, squid pen, lucainade. Chitin show wide physichochemical properties depends on these structures, α-, β-, γ- types. Also, chtosan as a cationic polysaccharide obtained by alkaline N-deacetylation of chitin is one of the most widely employed biopolymer. Several unique properties such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and bio-degradability, endow chitosan with potential possibility in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. In spite of these advantages as a biomaterial, chitosan has been limited for application in the pharmaceutics and food industry due to the poor solubility in distilled water. To solve this problem, we prepared low molecular water-soluble chitosan (LMWSC) with free-amine group. LMWSC can be applied as not a only drug carrier but also gene carrier because of a strong positive charge and high reactivity. |
