Culture broth mixing plays an important role in algal cultures. Various methods are used in conventional land-based culture systems, but they require machinery and electricity that increase the price of algal biodiesel. Offshore algal cultures are exposed to constant waves, and harnessing them for culture mixing can reduce the cost for algal biomass production. In this study, features for utilization of ocean waves into culture mixing were developed for floating ponds. For evaluation, relative mixing efficiency and algal biomass productivity were used. The floating ponds equipped with rope supports showed improved mixing efficiency and biomass productivity by 99% and 146%, respectively, compared with a simple floating pond. The results suggest that installation of such features can enhance algal culture mixing in floating pond. As the further research, the effects of number and distance between rope supports on culture mixing and algal biomass productivity will be investigated. |
