The carbon block is intermediate of artificial graphite. Carbon block is composed of the filler and binder. Filler is mainly graphitizable carbons(cokes, waste graphite etc.). The binder is mainly viscous carbonaceous materials. For example, resins, coal tar pitches, and petroleum pitches are representative binders. The petroleum pitch is derived from the petroleum residue oil which is wasted in most cases. Therefore, petroleum pitches are one of the cheapest binder. However, petroleum pitches have lots of volatile materials which cause degradation of properties of carbon block during carbonization process. In this case, mesophase pitch is used for the seed of nucleating heavy fractions during binder pitch production to enhance the thermal stability of binder pitch. |
