Lyotropic Liquid Crystals (LCs) are attractive materials as host system for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that can be dispersed efficiently and, at the same time, aligned via transfer of order from the host. Although surfactants are useful for preventing CNT aggregation, they can alter the nanotube pristine properties, becoming detrimental for applications. In the present work we aim at realizing a lyotropic LC host for CNTs at very low surfactant concentration. We use a combination of cationic and anionic surfactants [1], SDS and 12TAB for forming the lyotropic LC. In addition, CNTs are dispersed by another surfactant, octadecyltrimethylammonium (OTAB), using the sub Krafft method [2]. This approach was successful in making a total concentration of surfactant for the LC host equal to 8wt%, which is a less than one third than previously reported. [1] G. Scalia et al..
