Process intensification by coupling column with side-reactor (SRC) has gained tremendous importance as a competitive alternative to reactive distillation which is not always the optimal solution when working in the limited overlapping window of operating conditions. This study discussed the design and application of SRC configuration for two industrial chemical processes i.e. ethylbenzene, and methoxy-methylheptane. The economic steady state design was developed that minimizes the total annual cost. For both processes, SRC configuration appears overwhelmingly superior in terms of capital, energy, and total annual costs compared to that of conventional schemes. In addition, the effect of various design parameters that affect the optimum design was studied.
