In the present work, it was found that the colloidal particle size of poly(styrene-co-styrenesulfonic acid) samples containing 6.4 mol% of acid groups decreased from 14 nm to 12 nm then increased to 17 nm with decreasing solution concentration from 2e-4 g/mL to 6e-5 g/mL, and to 2e-5 g/mL, respectively. When the acid groups were neutralized with KOH, the particle size decreased from 19 nm to 12 nm, and then increased to 16nm with upon the dilution of the solution. However, crown ether molecules affected the colloid formation behavior of the ionomer solution. It was observed that upon the dilution the particle size increased from 11 nm to 19 nm progressively. This might be due to the fact that crown ether/K(I) complexes dissolved in an organic phase induced polyelectrolyte effects of the ionomer in the solution |
