Synthesis and Properties of Polylactide/Clay Nanocomposites |

A modified clay/polylactide nanocomposites is prepared. The clay is modified by grafting different molecular weight of polylactide onto the clay surface with Sn(Oct)2 and triphenylphosphine. The product yield is over 97% though residence time is about 10min and this modified clay shows exfoliated or partially intercalated structure. The modified clay is melt-compounded with a high molecular weight polylactide. This novel clay/polylactide nanocomposites exhibits the improvement of the shear thinning compared to the neat polylactide and conventional composites when molecular weight of grafted polylactide is over the critical molecular weight of chain entanglement. The overall mechanical properties of the modified clay/polylactide nanocomposites are also improved compared to the conventional nanocomposites. |
