10.5% efficiency of solar-driven electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO by using shingled Si solar cells |

Combination of photovoltaic devices and electrochemical cells is one of the promising technology to suppress global warming. In this study, singled Si solar cells interconnected in series were used to power electrochemical single cell for CO2 conversion to CO. To examine solar-driven electrochemical CO2 conversion to CO, silver nanoparticles having a mean diameter of 40nm were used as a catalyst for a cathode, and IrOx nanoparticles were used as an anode catalyst, respectively. Optimization of the loading weight of anion ionomer and silver catalyst for a cathode provided the high faradaic efficiency of 99%. As a singled Si solar cell interconnected with five pieces of p-type Si cells was employed as a power source, the best solar-to-CO energy conversion efficiency of 10.5% was demonstrated under simulated AM 1.5G illumination at 1 Sun. |
