Silicone rubber composites with carbon fiber(CF), sodium montmorillonite (MMT) and MMT modified with a silane compound bearing tetra sulfide group (MMTS4) were prepared and their mechanical properties and morphology were investigated by using XRD, SEM, TEM and UTM. All the silicone rubber/clay composites showed exfoliated/intercalated mixed morphology. However the tensile strength and elongation at break were increased by as much as 150% and 200%, respectively. According to the TGA analysis and the oxy-acetylene torch test results, the silicone rubber/clay and silicone rubber/CF composites exhibited higher thermal stability and better ablation properties than the neat silicone rubber.
