제목 Optimizing solid-state reversible thermochromic property of methyl red grafted on PDMS elastomer
초록 Thermochromic materials are generally known to exhibit color change dependence on temperature in a way easily detectable by the human naked eye. In this experiment, an aromatic azo dye methyl red (MR) was utilized as a thermochromic compound. The purpose of this study is to optimize the solid-state thermochromic response via polymer–dye complexes using room-temperature vulcanized polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer as a polymer substrate wherein MR was grafted on. The resulting material showed a reversible thermochromic effect from red to yellow. This thermochromic effect is due to the induced chemical structure change of MR from azonium to azo form, in contrast to the reported conformational change of the polymer backbone. Finally, the effect of the catalytic amount of iodine to the rate of reversible switching was also assessed.
