This study aimed at the application of baffles to MD modules to mitigate heat losses by temperature polarization and performance degradation by membrane fouling. A laboratory-scale direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) was used to investigate the effect of baffles on heat and mass transfer in the MD module. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out to theoretically analyze the experimental results. Different baffles including plate, orifice and propeller types were adopted and compared in terms of water flux, thermal efficiency, and the propensity of fouling by inorganic scales. |
