Novel Colorless and Transparent Rigid Polyimides with Controlled Molecular Structure by Chlorine Side Group |

Polyimides (PIs) have been recognized as a super-engineering plastic for more than 40 years due to its thermal stability, mechanical toughness, pliability, and outstanding electrical properties. However, conventional PIs such as Kapton film exhibit strong coloration from yellowish brown to blackish brown, confining their optical applications. As for the colorless PIs, fluorinated aromatic PIs and alicyclic PIs were known to reduce intra/intermolecular charge transfer complex formation and to grant colorless transparent films. Despite these good optical properties, these PIs have several major drawbacks including low thermal and mechanical properties such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high cost of their monomer materials. In this work, we synthesized new colorless PIs with good optical transparency and excellent thermal and mechanical properties using diverse chlorinated diamines and rigid dianhydrides and characterized their thermal, optical, and physical properties. |
