Spillage of hazardous organic solvents, regardless whether it is large-scale or small-scale, is tragic to its surrounding environment. In case of such spill, quick response and proper procedure to control the spill is absolutely important. Consequently, research to discover efficient chemical absorbents becomes very important pre-requisite for effective spill control. Here, we propose a set of new cellulose based and natural materials with high absorption efficency reaching above 800% against hazardous organic chemicals such as acrolein, butanone peroxide, epichlorohydrin, formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol, propylene oxide, and vinyl acetate. The absorption efficiency of these materials are measured and compared with generally used activated carbon and expended vermiculite chemical absorbents. Additionally, we report additional advantageous fuctionality of a cellulose based materials as chemical absorbent, and its enhancement in vapor retainment capability to protect surrounding eco-system even more effectively. The proposed chemical absorbents are not only efficient, but also economical because they are naturally abundant materials that are easy to purify. |
