Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer networks that can hold a lot of water or biological fluid. Hydrogels offer a wide range of material qualities that mimic real tissue in terms of softness, permeability, and hydration. They are the first biomaterials designed for use in the human body, and their biomedical uses are expanding rapidly. In this talk, we will demonstrate new types of biomedical devices based on hydrogel materials for COVID-19 reponse. The first topic will be a soft manipulator that can handle thin and fragile materials such as living monolayered cell tissues for cell-sheet engineering. This soft manipulator could help repair or regenerate damaged tissues and organs. Next, we will talk about new protective clothing combined with a wearable thermoelectric device and a dry-resistant heatsink. We believe that this lightweight and wearable Peltier cooling system would be useful in protecting frontline medical workers. |
