Investigation of Batch Process Microcellular Polylactide (PLA)/Silica Nanocomposite Foams |

Polylactide (PLA) is sustainable polymer material that has gained much attention in the polymer industry due to depletion of fossil resources and growing environmental concerns. Polymer foaming using supercritical CO2 as the physical blowing agent results in well controlled polymer foams with some micro sized cells and high foam density. In this research modified silica nanoparticles were incorporated in microcellular PLA foam to enhance its mechanical properties, thermal stability, and cell nucleation. PLA/silica nanocomposite was prepared by melt compounding process and was foamed using supercritical CO2. The incorporation of silica successfully enhanced cell nucleation and melt viscosity of the PLA foam. The increase in foam density and decrease cell size was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.
