Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), one of the most important biomass-based polymers, is known to be relatively brittle and have a low elongation at break. In this study, we prepared a biocomposite of plasticized PLA containing flax fibers. PLA was plasticized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and the surface of flax fiber was treated with NaOH. Plasticized PLA and the surface treated flax fiber were then blended in the Brabender mixer to obtain biocomposite. Mechanical and thermal properties of the plasticized PLA and the plasticized PLA/flax fiber biocomposite were measured by UTM, TGA, and DMA. Elongation at break of the plasticized PLA was increased, however, the glass transition temperature was decreased. |
