The main function of bone cement is to stabilize an implanted prosthesis by filling the gap between the prosthesis and its surrounding bone. Since the conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement has been modified in the aim of reducing curing temperature, while maintaining the mechanical property. In this study, functional bone cements, containing both Bis-GMA and Bis-GMA derivatives were examined for their feasibility as an alternative of the traditional bone cement. We have prepared two groups, Bis-GMA and Bis-GMA derivative (3MA mix; Bis-GMA 45%, 3MA 45%, 4MA 10%), adding the following components in common; 1) AW-GC as an inorganic filler, 2) lactide-based oligomer, GL15-Ac, as a biodegradable material, 3) gentamicin sulfate (GS) as an antibiotics, and 4) Barium sulfate (BaSO4) as a radiopacifier. The effects of different radiopacifier contents were evaluated through the tests of curing time/temperature, mechanical properties, and radiopacity. |
