P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is a widely used chemical. It is a monomer of engineering polymers like aramid fiber, and an ingredient of hair dyes. P-Diiodobenzene (PDIB) is a good starting material to synthesize PPD through aromatic amination using ammonia and copper catalysts. But the process synthesizing PPD from PDIB can’t be commercialized because PDIB is very expensive. To be commercialized, iodine should be recycled to PDIB. We envisioned that oxidation of ammonium iodide; a byproduct of aromatic amination of PDIB and subsequent oxyiodination of benzene using the recovered iodine will make a complete cycle for an economic synthesis of PPD. Schematically, I2 is recycled, and only benzene and ammonia are consumed. A process for the synthesis of PPD from PDIB has been developed. Catalysts have been developed, and the reaction conditions has been set. The results and future aspects will be presented. |
