Design and Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Block Copolymers for Drug Delivery |

Efficient delivery of therapeutics is critical for successful treatments of diseases. A lot of efforts have been devoted to develop synthetic materials and modify natural compounds for biomedical applications. In particular, self-assembled polymeric micelles have been extensively studied as nanocarriers for the delivery of small molecular or macromolecular therapeutics, and several systems have gone into clinical trials. Nature's ability to assemble macromolecules into highly cooperative and functional assemblies provides an inspiration for our efforts to devise synthetic design criteria to exploit the relationship between molecular structure and non-covalent interactions, and to develop new functional macromolecular assemblies for improved delivery of therapeutics in cancer therapy and treatment of infectious diseases. In this talk, several self-assembly strategies will be introduced to investigate the use of non-covalent interactions to assemble biodegradable multifunctional polymers into well-defined nanostructures that can encapsulate drugs with high loading level, narrow size distribution and kinetic stability, and exhibit therapeutic efficacy both in vitro and in vivo. |
