Biomimetic Mineralization of Vertically Aligned N-doped CNT Arrays |

We introduce biomimetic mineralization of vertically aligned nitrogen doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) arrays as straightforward route for carbon-based mineral nanocomposites. NCNTs are carbon nanotubes where a part of carbon atoms in the graphitic side wall of CNTs are partially substituted with N atoms. The partially doped quaternary and pyridinic N atoms in the graphitic plane of NCNTs play a role of the nucleation site for biomimetic mineralization. Using the nitrogen doped sites along the CNT backbone, SiO2 and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoshells can be readily formed on the surface of a vertically aligned NCNT arrays. Owing to the superior materials properties of NCNTs and straightforward pocessing via biomimetic mineralization, our approach offers a new opportunity for carbon-based mineral nanocomposites. |
