Molybdenum Sulfide/N-doped CNT Hybrid Electrochemical Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction |

Molybdenum sulfide is known as cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. However, it has innate shortcomings such as sparse catalytic edge sites and poor electrical conductivity. We report synthesis of hybrid HER catalyst composed of ~2nm amorphous molybdenum sulfide (MoSx) layer bound at vertical N-doped carbon nanotubes surface. This hybrid structure can be achieved by facile wet chemical process under low-temperature owing to high wettability of N-doped graphitic surface and electrostatic attraction between thiomolybdate precursor anion and N-doped sites. Protonated pyridinic N-doping sites at graphitic surfaces can strongly attract anionic precursors. Consequently, it shows very high HER catalytic activity which only requires potential of ~110 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm2 current density. This noticeable performance is originated from the synergistic effect from the dense catalytic sites at amorphous MoSx surface and fluent charge transport along NCNT forest electrodes. |
