Phase separation of a liquid crystal/diacrylate monomer mixture induced by photo-polymerization in a microfluidic channel |
초록 |
A microfluidics chip was used with UV exposure for making functional particles using a tripropane glycol diacrylate(TPGDA)/4-cyano-4’-pentylbiphenyl(5CB) mixture with photoinitiator as the disperse phase and water as the continuous phase. The oil in water droplets were successfully made in the microfluidics channel with a narrow size-dispersity. The initial homogenous droplet was phase-separated into the two-phase droplet by UV exposure. The core and shell in the two-phase droplet were 5CB-rich and poly(TPGDA)-rich, respectively. The phase-separated droplets were easily observed from an optical microscope with crossed polarizers. The effect of the concentration of the photo-initiator and the mixture ratio was explored in this study. The various-shape droplets including vesicles and porous sphere could be produced after removing 5CB in ethanol from the phase-separated droplet. This facile method may be applied to many fields such as drug delivery and ink-jet systems |
