Hydrophobically modified polysaccharide were composed of hydrophilic polysaccharide and hydrophobic side chains. Nanoparticles could be self-assembled to form micelles in an aqueous phase. Thus, it is expected that hydrophobic segment make up the interior of the particles and have high affinity for hydrophobic organic pollutants, while the outer hydrophilic groups stabilize the particles by extending into the aqueous phase. Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was proposed to treat wastewater containing inorganic pollutants and toxic organics because of the synergetic effect of two techniques, micelle and ultrafiltration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of self-assebmled polysaccharide nanoparticles for the removal of dissolved toxic pollutants from aqueous phase in micelle-enhanced ultrafiltration. Results for rejection rate and flow rate revealed that ultrafiltration using self-assembled nanoparticles is very effective at low concentration of nanoparticles to remove the toxic pollutants. Furthermore, the nanoparticles had no detrimental effect on the secondary contamination because the nanoparticles are self-assembled form natural polymer. |
