제목 Droplet-based microfluidic screening of fast-growing microalgal strains under fluctuating light enhances outdoor mass production of algal biomass
초록 Microalgae are attracting attention as a bio-platform for biological CO2 conversion based on its excellent carbon fixation ability. However, due to the low productivity in large-scale cultivation system using solar energy, commercialization is challenging. Light fluctuations due to changes in cloud cover and solar altitude are considered to be the major causes of cell growth reduction. Here, a novel microdroplet screening system capable of effectively delivering external light conditions to individual cells was introduced to select mutants exerting optimal growth performance under fluctuating light conditions. After cell growth in the gel microdroplet, microdroplets were centrifuged and separated according to their density. The separated microdroplets could be passed through the microchannel to increase the separation efficiency. Consequently, the selected mutant strain exhibited enhanced biomass and lipid productivity in outdoor mass cultivation using LNG-fired flue gas.
