Grid Search Assisted Coordinate Descent Methodology for Solving Retrofit Design Optimization Problems |

Tough environmental regulation, intense competition and expensive fossil energy using make efforts to retrofit an existing purification process to reduce energy requirement become an important objective. One of challenge tasks is to optimize the retrofit of existing processes precisely and effectively. This paper proposes a practical method employing coordinate descent methodology (CD), which is assisted by grid search (GS) for optimal retrofit. The results show that the grid search assisted coordinate descent methodology (GSCD) effectively avoid the local optimal points and show competitive to CD. The proposed GSCD method was successful in finding the optimum proposed sequence, which result in operating cost saving 42.6% compared to the representative base case while increasing capacity up to 30%.
