One-Pot In-Situ Formation of Sulfur-Rich BCP Nanoparticles with Tunable Size and Refractive Index through ROMP |

Self-assembly of block copolymer (BCP) is a powerful and extensively studied method of preparing well-defined nanostructures with various morphology. In most of the cases, however, the driving force for the nanostructure formation is strictly limited to the difference in the solubility of each block in a selective solvent among other molecular factors. Furthermore, one-pot, in situ preparation of nanoparticles from BCPs has been difficult. Herein, we report a new platform for the in-situ formation of BCP nanoparticles using sulfur-rich norbornene derivatives through ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Due to the low solubility of sulfur-containing blocks in many solvents, the BCPs undergo in-situ nanoparticlization to yield thermally stable sulfur-rich nanoparticles with controlled size ranging from 20 to 50 nm. By varying the feed ratio of the sulfur-containing monomer, the sulfur content as well as refractive index of resulting BCP nanoparticles could be easily controlled. |
