Effective CO2/N2 separation membranes were fabricated by SBS-g-POEM with EMIMDCA (an ionic liquid (IL)). The copolymer was synthesized via a free-radical polymerization process. Miscibility of the copolymer and IL was observed by FT–IR, WAXS and UTM. The nanostructure and well-dispersed IL in the matrix were identified by TEM and SAXS. SBS polymer exhibited a 372 Barrer of CO2 permeability and 16.4 of CO2/N2 selectivity. The performance was increased to 407 Barrer and 21.6 selectivity for SBS-g-POEM owing to improved CO2 affinity of hydrophilic POEM. The permeability was enhanced to 514 Barrer with a slight decrease of selectivity in the case of the membrane with EMIMDCA. Alternatively, a SBS – EMIMDCA membrane did not exhibit the performance because of low miscibility and poor membrane mechanical strength; this indicated the important role of POEM chains. In addition, we identified a new possible application such as use in Li-ion separation membranes since the SBS-g-POEM/IL complex has high ion conductivity. |
